Review Workshop at EU Joint Research Center in Ispra
|
| |
|
The first Task 53 workshop - for members only - held at the EU Joint Research Center (JRC) in Ispra, Italy from March 3-5 2025, was a significant international gathering focused on creating the way to V2G interoperability. The event brought together experts from Europe, North America, Asia, Australia, and South Africa, including representatives from -EV & EVSE manufacturers, grid operators, regulators, and testing laboratories. |
| |
|
Key activities and highlights of the three-day event included: |
| |
 |
|
Analysis of Gaps & Bugs in the ISO 15118-20 EV-EVSE Standard Protocol |
 |
|
Defining the working scope of Task 53 |
 |
|
Working on the testing plan at JRC Laboratory as well as Argonne National Laboratory for Task 53 members |
 |
|
Getting an overview and exchange on timelines regarding bidirectional progress of member companies & research centers |
 |
|
Presentation and Insights into the JRC laboratory |
 |
|
Networking |
| |
|
If you are interested in more details about workshop see Bjoerns Post
We are very happy about the active participation of our members to work on this mission as a cooperation – as we all know - V2G can only be scaled if interoperability is achieved! |
| |
|
During the workshop, Task 53 has formed three working groups that will meet once a month online to collaboratively exchange common hurdles, challenges and share best practice results withing the following topics: |
| |
Group 1: Data Handling and Confidentiality |
| |
|
Focusing on the building of a trusted data ecosystem for bidirectional charging and harmonizing testing frameworks across laboratories.
First Date: 15. April 2025 |
| |
Group 2: DC Bidi Charging - Basics |
| |
|
Addressing the technical and operational challenges from vehicle to charging station to the grid.
First Date: 16. April 2025 |
| |
Group 3: Additional Aspects for AC - Bidi Charging |
| |
|
Specifying on the challenges of AC-bidirectional charging.
First Date: 17. April 2025 |
| |
|
The meetings will occur regularly on the third full week of the month from 16:30 to 18:00 CET (7:30 to 9:00 AM in California)

Here is a summary of Task 53‘s recent activities and ongoing projects in North America. |
| |
Open Letter to the US EV OEMs (and European and Asian as well) |
| |
|
Task 53 now focuses on bringing EV OEMs on board for Task 53, covering both light-duty vehicles (passenger cars) and heavy-duty vehicles (school buses). We posted an open letter on LinkedIn explaining why bidirectional charging interoperability is crucial for scaling V2G. Pursuing bilaterally noninteroperable independently makes sense for now, to learn from the customers and the market. However, it is not a viable long-term strategy. |
| |
Dialog with the California Energy Commission |
| |
|
Task 53 is currently discussing pathways for advancing interoperability in VGI and V2G technologies both within California and on a broader scale with the California Energy Commission (CEC). We were also happy that CEC gave a presentation at the Ispra workshop. |
| |
Preparations with Argonne Laboratories for Testing Process for Task 53 Members |
| |
|
Within Task 53’s partnership with Argonne National Laboratory, we are developing the plan for conformance and interoperability testing of Task 53 member products. Argonne's high-performance testing facilities will enable us to simulate and validate the tested technologies under various conditions related to conformance and interoperability testing. We are pleased to announce that Quality Logic has joined Task 53 as a member. QualityLogic is an industry-leading software testing company that offers a range of software testing solutions for various industries, including conformance, performance, usability, and interoperability testing. |

Save the Date: V2G Forum California |
| |
|
Task 53 will present at the 5th V2G Business, Policy, and Technology Forum from May 6 to 8, 2025, in San Ramon, California. Task 53 will present on Wednesday, May 7, with the topic: “Achieving V2G Interoperability Internationally: An Update on Task 53.” as well as participate in a panel discussion: “Interoperability Issues: Charging Interop and Smart Grid Interop - Both Vehicle and Charging Network Side” chaired by James Mater, Quality Logic.
The V2G Forum event brings together industry leaders, working groups, and utility professionals to accelerate V2G standardization and adoption in North America. For more information, visit: https://v2gforum.com |

We need to act faster to finally scale V2G technology globally. For this we urgently require additionally 3 EV OEMs, and 4 DSOs to join Task 53 by May 2025.
Why does this matter:
Interoperability: Avoid fragmented "silo" solutions and ensure EVs work with any charger or grid worldwide using an adjusted ISO 15118-20-based protocol
Cost reduction: Save development costs by using shared testing infrastructure like Argonne National Laboratory and the JRC as a Task 53 member.
Market access: Meet regulatory demands in Europe, China, and California while boosting residual values of EVs through future-proof bidirectional capabilities
Speed: Accelerate conformance testing throughworld-class labs and technical documentation
Collaboration: Interoberability can only be achieved if partners work together. It is impossible to do it alone. |
| |
|
We kindly ask you to reach out to some of your most innovative national DSOs, as well as to the OEMs, convincing them of the importance of joining Task 53.
We would be more than happy to explain the details in a specific call to every single potential partner you may provide. Please contact us for this. |
| |
|
If you have any comment, critique, suggestion, question referring to this Newsletter and/or Task 53: Please let us know.
Thank you for your continued support and participation in Task 53. Together, we are contributing to a more sustainable and interconnected future for electric vehicles and the energy systems.
