CharIn and Task 53: Two Stages to One Goal |
| |
|
If you have wondered what the difference between Task 53 testing and the October Testival of CharIn are, find below the explanation:
CharIN: Leads Bilateral BiDi Interoperability Testing: ealy-stage, development-focused validation between one EV and one EVSE – enabling debugging and faster technical readiness.
Task 53: Multi-Party BiDi Interoperability Testing: System-wide validation across EVs, charging stations, and the grid – with a focus on market readiness and V2G scalability. |

From November 4 to 6, 2025 our second in-person Workshop will be held at the FHNW in Brugg, Switzerland.
In addition to the sessions, participants will join an excursion to Swissgrid, the Swiss Transmission System Operator (TSO).Together with all our partners, we’ll prepare for the upcoming testing phase, align on the specific plan, and define the analyses to be carried out.
This workshop is exclusive to members. If you’re not yet part of the group, there is a chance: become a member and secure your spot! |

|
The workshop will also be accessible online for those who are not able to travel. Find the agenda and program below. |

Working Groups of Task 53 |
| |
Bidirectional Basic Working Group
|
| |
|
This group is led by Tillmann Laux and Task 53 core team, and focuses on clarifying the roadmap draft, reviewing the test case template from the Data Handling Working Group, and collecting or creating test cases, including a discussion on priorities for Sprint 1. In parallel, industry updates on product readiness were collected, presented, and discussed. |
| |
Bidirectional Basic Working Group
|
| |
|
This group began with several industry presentations covering the general setup of AC bidirectional charging and the details of ISO 15118-20 Amendment 1. Discussions centered on specific standards, concluding with a focus on testing and use cases. |
| |
Data Handling and Confidentiality Working Group
|
| |
|
Led by Sam Thurston (Argonne National Lab) and Harald Scholz (JRC Ispra) together with the Task 53 Core Team, this group reviewed and accepted the test case template suggested by Sam Thurston. Work was finalized on the Data Dissemination and Governance policies as well as the Testing Results Template. The group also focused on refining the longlist of standards provided by CharIN and addressed the important topic of cybersecurity, including different types of threats and security steps. |

Bjoern recently represented Task 53 at the VGIC's annual EVolve 2025 event in Berkeley, held from September 24-25, 2025.
Key themes emphasized that interoperability is critical to V2G success, supported by advances in onboard inverter technology that are driving down costs for AC V2G.
Customer simplicity and positive experiences were seen as essential, alongside cross-industry collaboration between utilities, OEMs, and aggregators. With billions in potential system savings, regulatory innovation, through new cost allocation methods and performance-based frameworks, was identified as a cornerstone for unlocking full value.
On the technical side, GM and Rivian shared progress toward a $500 target for bidirectional AC home charging equipment. Rivian’s 500‑amp design enables efficient V2G operation, while experts noted challenges such as ripple currents in DC systems and the need for buffer batteries in UPS-like setups. Onboard AC chargers were highlighted as efficient, cost-competitive solutions with high future potential.
