VGI-Week, May 5-8, San Ramon, California |
| |
|
The week of May 5–8, 2025, could be named "VGI week" in San Ramon, California. It was filled with VGI/V2G demonstrations, a full-day EPRI workshop, and two days of V2G Forum presentations and networking.
Day one included a visit to the largest operational V2G site in the USA. Seventy-four RIDE/BYD electric school buses connected to Tellus V2G EVSEs and linked to the PG&E grid were demonstrated. California has over 23,000 yellow school buses and USA 485,000 school buses, making it by far the largest fleet in North America and a prime candidate for interoperable bidirectional charging solutions. |

Day 2 of the week featured a full day organized by EPRI, with presentations and panel sessions focused on grid assets, including EV charging with stationary battery storage, managing EVs as loads, and V1G.
The V2G Business, Policy, and Technology Forum was the fifth of its kind and took place in San Ramon, California, from May 6 to 8 (https://v2gforum.com). The Forum brings together leading industry players, working groups, utility professionals, and others committed to effectively developing and implementing vehicle-to-grid technology in the United States. Pacific Gas and Electric Company was the utility host sponsor. |
| |
|
Task 53 was represented by Bjoern Christensen, who on day 1 gave a presentation with the title: "Achieving V2G Interoperability Internationally: An Update on Task 53".
|
| |
|
Bjoern’s presentation provided an overview of the significant progress that Task 53 has made since the last V2G Forum presentation in October 2024. This included the addition of the UK, Canada, and Austria, bringing the total number of countries to 12, along with the EU.
On day 2, Bjoern participated in the 80-minute panel discussion led by James Mater, Quality Logic (a Task 53 member): "Interoperability Issues: Charging Interop and Smart Grid Interop - Both Vehicle and Charging Network Side."
The panel discussion centered on what needs to be done to achieve interoperability between the EV and the network side (EVSE, grid), including the need for conformance and interoperability testing with the right lab and simulation components. |

Nordic EV Summit 2025: V2G as a ''No-Brainer''
|
| |
|
The Nordic EV Summit 2025 in Oslo featured a well-attended session with over 1000 attendees on April 9, focusing on bidirectional charging. Marco Piffaretti, Operating Agent of IEA Task 53, delivered the keynote address. The session included presentations from Kurt Østrem (Zaptec), Baerte de Brey (Elaad/Stedin), and Carla Trevino (Irdeto), and was moderated by Ståle Frydenlund (Norwegian EV Association). The discussion centered on strategies to simplify and promote the adoption of bidirectional EV charging by 2027 latest. |
| |
|
BTU and EVTEC, two of the early members of Task53, were prominently featured at last month’s “Bidirectional Charging” special exhibit during The smarter E Europe in Munich showcasing a 20 kW DC bidirectional charging solution compatible with Volkswagen’s ID. platform with live demonstrations. Both are active partners in the BiCCS project, which focuses, among other objectives, on supporting the transition from ISO 15118-2 — including Volkswagen’s proprietary Value Added Services (VAS) — to ISO 15118-20 implementation. |
