The first full year of Task 53 promises to be an exciting one, with a series of key dates and events lined up. For those interested in participating, please find the attached links for more details. For those unable to attend, we will keep you updated through our newsletters. Stay tuned for more information! |

First Task 53 Workshop, March 3-5, Ispra, Italy |
| |
Focus: Addressing the GAPs and BUGs of ISO 15118-20 and Grid Codes with over 50 experts expected (including European and Japanese EV-OEMs) to participate.
Registrations for Task 53 members has closed on January 24th. If you haven’t registered yet or if you are not yet a Task 53 member, please contact Regina Flury for more information. |

Vehicle-to-Grid, Vehicle-to-Home & Smart Charging Conference, April 2-3, Achen, Germany |
| |
Marco Piffaretti, operating agent of Task 53, has been invited to present "Task 53: Why the World Needs Interoperability of Bidirectional Charging" at the 5th "VEHICLE-TO-GRID, VEHICLE-TO-HOME & SMART CHARGING" conference.

61st Meeting of the Ecexutive Committee (ExCo), May 6-9, Leipzig, Germany |
| |
The dates for the 61st meeting of the Executive Committee (ExCo) of the IEA’s Electric Vehicles Technology Collaboration Program (EV TCP) have been confirmed for May 6-9, 2025, in Leipzig, Germany. This event provides an excellent opportunity for countries interested in becoming EV-TCP members to join and engage with the program. |
| |
Task 53 has onboarded World Resources Institutes (WRI), which gives an opening into the North American electric school bus (ESB) eco-system and synergy with WRI’s global presence. ESB presents one of the best business cases for V2G since they have large batteries (typically 200+ kWh), only drives in the morning and afternoon to pickup/deliver kids, do not drive in the weekends, and are parked during 2 months in the Summer. |
| |
EVS-38, June 16-18, Gothenburg, Sweden |
| |
Several members of the Task 53 core-team will be in Gothenburg during the EVS-38 period (15-18 June) and are happy to meet you for bilateral discussions: please book a meeting as soon as possible with the Operating Agent Marco Piffaretti.

Task 53 has been presented at V2G Summit, January 28th, 2025, Berlin, Germany
| |
At the V2G Summit held on January 28th in Berlin, Task 53 was presented during the third session of the conference. The panel included prominent speakers: Markus Hackmann, Managing Director of P3; Christoph Pellinger, Managing Director of FfE; Marcus Fendt, Managing Director of The Mobility House; alongside Nicole Waechter from Task 53. The key message emphasized during the session was the critical importance of interoperability in bidirectional charging for the scalability of V2G technology. Without achieving interoperability, V2G technology may only be applicable for behind-the-meter use. However, as highlighted by the International Energy Agency (IEA), short-term flexibility is urgently required, and it is primarily through V1G and V2G technologies that this flexibility can be provided to support grid stability and resilience.
This discussion reaffirmed Task 53s commitment to driving forward the necessary advancements in interoperability to ensure the widespread adoption of bidirectional charging, positioning it as a key enabler of a sustainable and flexible energy future: |
| |
Battery storage and directed charging of EVs provide the bulk of the short-term flexibility needs that rise 4.5-fold by 2050

CharIN to form "Bidi-subgroup"
| |
On January 23rd, 2025, CharIN hosted two webinars focusing on bidirectional charging and V2G, based on an inquiry conducted among the 330 CharIN members to gauge their interest in bidirectional charging. Out of the 86 positive responses received, 83% expressed interest in AC bidirectional charging, 91% in DC bidirectional charging, and 35% in wireless bidirectional charging.
CharIN members have now the choice of becoming:
- ACTIVE MEMBER, who is a CharIN-Member who also wants to participate in Task 53 as a partner, bringing test-objects (vehicles, chargers, software, simulators, grids, etc.) into the Task 53 program and contributing the fee (discount according to country and turnover).
- PASSIVE MEMBER, who is a CharIN-Member who does not want to participate in the Task 53 activities directly, but wants to receive updates from Task 53 during a bi-monthly update-TelCo organized by CharIN for this members and presented by Task 53.

News from Northern America and Asia

Task 53 has onboarded World Resources Institutes (WRI), which gives an opening into the North American electric school bus (ESB) eco-system and synergy with WRI’s global presence. ESB presents one of the best business cases for V2G since they have large batteries (typically 200+ kWh), only drives in the morning and afternoon to pickup/deliver kids, do not drive in the weekends, and are parked during 2 months in the Summer. |

Cooperation with Vehicle Grid Integration Council (VGIC) |
| |
Task 53 has collaborated closely with VGIC to move V2X forward primarily in the North American market. VGIC counts as member of the most important industrial companies in the V2G space, including the EV OEMs: Ford Motors, Nissan, GM, Honda, Mercedes, Hyundai, Toyota, Tesla, and Stellantis.
Bjoern presented Task 53 to the VGIC members on January 29. |
| |
We have onboarded the first member from India – the Grid Integration Laboratory (GIL). GIL completed a 2-year "V2X in India" study at the end of 2023 and is now in the middle of a new study on "V2X for heavy transport vehicles in India". We look forward to working with GIL to accelerate interoperability of bidirectional charging solutions in India. India is the world’s 5th largest automobile manufacturer, is the world’s most populous country, and the world’s 3rd largest GHG emitter. India presents great potential to eventually move the needle of V2G solutions to increase renewables in India. |
| |
In addition to Marco Piffaretti (Operating Agent), Regina Flury (Task 53 Secretariat), Nicole Waechter (Communications), and Bjoern Christensen (North America Representative), Task 53 is pleased to welcome Patrick Eugster (LinkedIn) as a part-time scientific collaborator.
Furthermore, Task 53 has established collaboration agreements with two ISO15118-20 experts:
Stephan Voit (LinkedIn), specializing in DC bidirectional charging, and
Tillmann Laux (LinkedIn), focusing on AC bidirectional charging (the solution he was implementing when he was at SONO Motors).
They will present their findings on BUGs and GAPs during the first Task 53 Workshop, taking place in March 2025 at JRC in Ispra. This expansion reinforces Task 53’s capacity to tackle the interoperability challenges of bidirectional charging and accelerate its global adoption. |

The initiative conducts research to identify standardization gaps and propose solutions that enhance interoperability and performance of V2G systems. If you would like to participate in the gaps & bugs analysis, you can participate in our enquiry about gaps & bugs. Your contribution is very welcome! |
